Most “missing” messages aren’t deleted; they’re filtered into a folder people don’t check. This guide covers every place messages can be, how to search them, and what to do when one has really gone. Your full message history can also be exported; see how to download your Instagram data. Posts and stories you deleted, rather than messages, are covered in how to find recently deleted posts and stories on Instagram.
Where Are Your Instagram Messages?
Your messages live in your inbox, split into your main chats, Requests and Hidden Requests. The table shows where each kind of message goes.
| Where | What ends up there | How to open it |
|---|---|---|
| Inbox (chats) | Conversations with people you follow or have accepted | Messenger icon at the top of your feed |
| Requests | Messages from accounts you don’t follow | Tap Requests at the top of the inbox |
| Hidden Requests | Requests Instagram filtered as possibly offensive or spam | Inside Requests, open Hidden Requests |
| Primary and General tabs | Chats sorted on professional accounts | Tabs at the top of a professional account’s inbox |
How Do You Find Message Requests on Instagram?
Open your inbox and tap Requests; tap a request to read it, then accept it to move it into your chats, or delete or block the sender. The sender doesn’t see that you’ve read a request until you accept it. Listed below are the 3 steps.
- Open your inbox.
- Tap Requests at the top.
- Open Hidden Requests at the bottom of the list to see filtered messages.
How Do You Search Your Instagram Messages?
Type a name or username into the search bar at the top of your inbox to find a conversation. To find a specific message inside a long chat, open the chat, tap the person’s name at the top, and use the search option in the chat details where your app offers it.
Why Can’t You Find a Message on Instagram?
A message disappears from view when it’s in Requests or Hidden Requests, the sender unsent it, you deleted the chat, or the sender’s account was deactivated or deleted. The table shows how to tell which.
| What you see | Likely cause | Can you get it back? |
|---|---|---|
| Chat missing from the inbox | It’s in Requests or Hidden Requests | Yes, accept it |
| A note that a message was unsent | The sender removed it | No |
| Chat gone after you deleted it | You removed it from your inbox | Only if it’s in an earlier data export |
| Messages from an account show as from an unknown user | Their account was deactivated or deleted | No |
What can and can’t be recovered is covered in how to find deleted messages on Instagram.
How Do You Stop Messages Going to Hidden Requests?
Your message controls decide who can message you and where their messages land; open Settings, then Messages and story replies, then Message controls. Loosening filters lets more messages through; tightening them sends more to Requests.
How Do You Keep a Copy of Your Messages?
The only official way to keep a copy is to export your data with messages included. The export reflects what exists in your account when you request it, and Instagram notes that some deleted information won’t appear in downloads (Instagram Help Center). Export before you delete anything you might need; the steps are in how to download your Instagram data.
