How to Find Archived Posts, Old Stories and Highlights on Instagram
To find archived posts and old stories on Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Archive; switch between Stories archive, Posts archive and Live archive at the top.

To find archived posts and old stories on Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Archive; switch between Stories archive, Posts archive and Live archive at the top. Old stories are saved there automatically after 24 hours if your story archive is turned on, which it is by default. Archived posts are hidden from your profile, not deleted, and you can show them again at any time. This is one of the data tasks that start from downloading your Instagram data.
The archive is the answer to most “where did my old story go?” questions. This guide covers each archive, highlights, memories, and why an archive can look empty. Deleted content is covered separately in how to find recently deleted posts and stories on Instagram. Posts you saved from other accounts are kept somewhere else, in saved posts and reels on Instagram.
Where Is the Archive on Instagram?
The archive is in the menu on your profile. Listed below are the 4 steps.
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the menu (three lines).
- Tap Archive.
- Switch between Stories archive, Posts archive and Live archive at the top.
What’s the Difference Between Archive, Highlights and Recently Deleted?
The archive keeps your content privately, highlights show chosen stories on your profile, and Recently deleted holds deleted content for a limited time. The table compares them.
| Place | What’s there | Who sees it | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stories archive | Your stories after they expire | Only you | Until you delete them |
| Posts archive | Posts you chose to archive | Only you | Until you unarchive or delete them |
| Highlights | Stories you picked for your profile | Anyone who can see your profile | Until you remove them |
| Recently deleted | Content you deleted | Only you | 30 days, or 24 hours for unarchived stories |
How Do You Find Your Old Instagram Stories?
Open Archive, then Stories archive, and scroll by date; your expired stories are kept there while the story archive setting is on. Some versions also show a calendar or map view and “On this day” memories that resurface old stories. To turn the archive on, open your story settings and switch on saving stories to the archive.
How Do You Unarchive a Post?
Open the post in Posts archive, tap the three dots and choose Show on profile. It returns to its original place in your grid with its likes and comments.
How Do You Add Archived Stories to Highlights?
Open a story in your Stories archive and tap Highlight, then choose an existing highlight or create a new one. Highlights stay on your profile until you remove them.
Why Is Your Instagram Archive Empty?
An archive looks empty when the story archive setting was off, you’re looking at the wrong archive tab, or you’re logged into a different account. Stories posted while the archive was off disappear after 24 hours and aren’t saved anywhere in the app.
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Viewing Stories archive when you want posts | Switch to Posts archive at the top |
| Story archive was off | Turn it on for future stories; past ones can’t be recovered |
| Wrong account | Switch accounts from your profile |
A copy of the stories and posts still on your account is also in your data download; see how to download your Instagram data.
