To see Instagram Insights, switch to a professional account (Creator or Business), then tap Professional dashboard on your profile and open your insights; for a single post, tap View insights under it. Insights cover any preset or custom range within the past 90 days. Audience demographics appear once your content reaches or engages more than 100 accounts.

Personal accounts don’t get Insights, and Insights only ever cover your own account. This hub covers where to find them, what each metric means, the thresholds that hide data, and the guides on engagement, shares and timing. Every other Instagram guide starts from how to search on Instagram.

How Do You Get Instagram Insights?

You get Insights by switching to a Creator or Business account, which is free. Listed below are the 4 steps.

  1. Open Settings from the menu on your profile.
  2. Find the account type and tools option, and switch to a professional account.
  3. Choose Creator or Business and a category.
  4. Return to your profile and tap Professional dashboard.

Insights start collecting from the day you switch; earlier activity isn’t backfilled.

What Do Instagram Insights Show?

Insights show how far your content travels, how people respond, and who your audience is. Instagram’s help page on insights lists account and content metrics, plus follower growth, top locations and age range (Instagram Help Center). The table summarises the main ones.

Metric What it measures
Views How many times your content was displayed, repeats included; this replaced the older impressions and plays
Accounts reached How many different accounts saw your content
Accounts engaged How many accounts interacted, split into followers and non-followers
Interactions Likes, comments, saves, shares and replies
Total followers Growth, top locations, age ranges and active times
Content you shared Posts, reels and stories in the period

Who shared your posts isn’t listed by name; what Instagram does show is covered in how to see who shared or reposted your Instagram post.

How Far Back Do Instagram Insights Go?

Insights cover a preset or custom timeframe within the past 90 days. You choose the period from the dropdown at the top of Insights (Instagram Help Center). For a longer history, note your numbers regularly or export them, because older account-level data drops out of view.

Why Can’t You See Audience Demographics?

Demographics stay hidden until your content reaches or engages more than 100 accounts in a preset timeframe, and follower trends need at least 100 followers. If Last 7 days shows nothing, Instagram suggests trying a longer preset, such as Last 30 days or Last 90 days (Instagram Help Center).

Problem Fix
No Insights at all Switch to a Creator or Business account
Demographics blank Choose a longer preset timeframe
Follower trends blank Reach 100 followers
Old posts missing data Only activity since switching is counted

Which Insights Matter Most?

The numbers that guide decisions are reach from non-followers, interactions per post, and follower growth. Listed below are the related guides that turn them into action.

Can You See Insights for Someone Else’s Instagram?

No, Insights are private to each account; for other accounts you only see public numbers, such as likes, comments, video views and follower counts. Reach, saves, shares and demographics stay hidden. Public numbers are still enough to compare accounts, which is how competitor research works.

How to Measure Public Accounts With apidojo

apidojo’s Instagram Scraper on Apify collects the public numbers for every post on a profile: likeCount, commentCount, the video playCount, the post date, and the owner’s followerCount. That turns competitor benchmarking into a spreadsheet (Apify).

{
  "startUrls": ["https://www.instagram.com/competitor/"],
  "maxItems": 100
}

It costs $0.50 per 1,000 posts, and each profile should return at least 10 posts. Tracking several competitors over time is covered in how to track competitors on Instagram. TikTok’s version of these numbers is covered in how to see TikTok analytics.
