Is a Tweet the Same as a Post?

Yes, a tweet and a post are the same thing: X renamed tweets to posts after Twitter became X, and retweets became reposts. X’s own help pages now use post and repost throughout (X Help Center). This series uses both words, because most people still search for tweets.

What Are the Types of Tweets?

There are 4 types of tweets: an original post, a reply, a repost and a quote post. X describes a quote post as another person’s post shared with your own comment added (X Help Center).

Type What it is How to search it

Search operators for each type are in the Twitter advanced search operators reference. Quoting is explained in how to quote tweet on X.

What Is a Tweet ID?

A tweet ID is the unique number at the end of a tweet’s URL, and it encodes the moment the tweet was created. In x.com/NASA/status/1140437409710116865, the ID is 1140437409710116865. IDs created since June 2010 are Snowflake IDs: shifting the ID right by 22 bits and adding 1288834974657 gives the creation time in milliseconds (twitter-advanced-search reference). Opening a tweet from its ID is covered in how to view a tweet by ID on X.

Who Can See a Tweet?

Anyone can see a public tweet, while a tweet from a protected account is visible only to followers that account has approved. If a protected account replies or mentions someone, only approved followers see it (X Help Center). Protected posts don’t appear in public search.

What Happens When a Tweet Is Deleted?

When a tweet is deleted, it disappears from X for everyone, including search results, and quotes of it show that the post is unavailable. Recovering one is covered in how to find deleted tweets, and the notices X shows in its place in what “deleted by tweet author” means and why a tweet says this post is unavailable.
