**A tweet is a message published on X (formerly Twitter), now officially called a post, that can contain up to 280 characters of text plus photos, a GIF, a video or links.** Every tweet has a unique numeric ID and its own web address, and it can be a standalone post, a reply, a repost or a quote.

This page explains what a tweet is made of and links to every guide in this section, from posting and quoting to finding deleted tweets.

## Is a Tweet the Same as a Post?

**Yes, a tweet and a post are the same thing: X renamed tweets to posts after Twitter became X, and retweets became reposts.** X’s own help pages now use post and repost throughout ([X Help Center](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/how-to-post)). This series uses both words, because most people still search for tweets.

## What Can a Tweet Contain?

**A tweet can contain up to 280 characters of text and up to 4 media items, such as photos, a GIF or a video.** X Premium subscribers can write longer posts (X Help Center). Listed below are the parts of a tweet.

| Part | What it is |
| --- | --- |
| Text | Up to 280 characters, longer with X Premium |
| Media | Up to 4 items: photos, a GIF or a video |
| Links | URLs to other pages, shown as link cards |
| Mentions | @username references that notify the account |
| Hashtags | #words that group posts by topic |
| Cashtags | $TICKER symbols for stocks and crypto |
| Engagement | Likes, reposts, quotes, replies, bookmarks and views |

Posting a tweet step by step is covered in [how to post a tweet on X](/blog/x-guides/how-to-post-a-tweet/).

## What Are the Types of Tweets?

**There are 4 types of tweets: an original post, a reply, a repost and a quote post.** X describes a quote post as another person’s post shared with your own comment added ([X Help Center](https://help.twitter.com/en/using-x/types-of-posts)).

| Type | What it is | How to search it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Original post | A new post on your own timeline | from:username -filter:replies |
| Reply | A response in someone’s thread | filter:replies |
| Repost | Someone else’s post shared unchanged | filter:nativeretweets (recent days only) |
| Quote post | Someone else’s post shared with your comment | filter:quote |

Search operators for each type are in the [Twitter advanced search operators](/blog/twitter-search/advanced-search-operators/) reference. Quoting is explained in [how to quote tweet on X](/blog/x-guides/quote-tweet/).

## What Is a Tweet ID?

**A tweet ID is the unique number at the end of a tweet’s URL, and it encodes the moment the tweet was created.** In `x.com/NASA/status/1140437409710116865`, the ID is `1140437409710116865`. IDs created since June 2010 are Snowflake IDs: shifting the ID right by 22 bits and adding 1288834974657 gives the creation time in milliseconds ([twitter-advanced-search reference](https://github.com/igorbrigadir/twitter-advanced-search)). Opening a tweet from its ID is covered in [how to view a tweet by ID on X](/blog/x-guides/view-tweet-by-id/).

## Who Can See a Tweet?

**Anyone can see a public tweet, while a tweet from a protected account is visible only to followers that account has approved.** If a protected account replies or mentions someone, only approved followers see it (X Help Center). Protected posts don’t appear in public search.

## What Happens When a Tweet Is Deleted?

**When a tweet is deleted, it disappears from X for everyone, including search results, and quotes of it show that the post is unavailable.** Recovering one is covered in [how to find deleted tweets](/blog/x-guides/find-deleted-tweets/), and the notices X shows in its place in [what “deleted by tweet author” means](/blog/x-guides/deleted-by-tweet-author/) and [why a tweet says this post is unavailable](/blog/x-guides/post-unavailable/).

## What Data Does a Tweet Hold?

**Behind the screen, a tweet is a data record with an ID, text, timestamp, language, author and engagement counts.** apidojo’s [Tweet Scraper V2](https://apify.com/apidojo/tweet-scraper) returns these fields, including `id`, `text`, `createdAt`, `likeCount`, `retweetCount`, `replyCount`, `quoteCount` and `bookmarkCount`, for any public tweet it collects (Apify).
