# Why a Tweet Says 'This Post Is Unavailable'

"This post is unavailable" means X can't show you that post, usually because it was deleted, it comes from a protected account you don't follow, the account was deactivated or suspended, or the author blocked you.

**“This post is unavailable” means X can’t show you that post, usually because it was deleted, it comes from a protected account you don’t follow, the account was deactivated or suspended, or the author blocked you.** X lists these cases in its guide to notices. Some causes affect everyone; a block or a protected account affects only you.

The notice often appears above replies or inside quote posts, where another post still points to the missing one. The deleted-post notice is covered separately in [what “deleted by tweet author” means](/blog/x-guides/deleted-by-tweet-author/). For the parts of a post and where its ID lives, see [what a tweet is on X](/blog/x-guides/what-is-a-tweet/).

## What Are the Reasons a Post Is Unavailable?

**X names 4 situations in which a post is unavailable to view: a protected account you don’t follow, an account that blocked you, a deleted post, and a deactivated account.** ([X Help Center](https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/notices-on-x)). Suspended accounts and posts withheld in your country also make a post unviewable. The table shows how to tell them apart.

| Reason | Who can’t see it | How to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The post was deleted | Everyone | The author’s profile no longer has the post |
| The account is protected | Everyone the account hasn’t approved | A lock icon on the profile |
| The account was deactivated | Everyone | The profile says the account doesn’t exist |
| The account was suspended | Everyone | The profile shows a suspension notice |
| The author blocked you | Only you | See the checks in who blocked me on Twitter |
| The post is withheld in your country | Viewers in that country | X shows a country-withheld notice |

## How Do You Find Out Why a Post Is Unavailable?

**Open the author’s profile, then ask a second person or a second account to open the same link; whether they can see it tells you whether the cause is general or specific to you.** Listed below are the 3 checks.

1. **Open** the post’s link, `x.com/username/status/ID`, and the author’s profile.
2. **Look** for a lock icon, a suspension notice or a missing account.
3. **Compare** with another viewer: if they see the post and you don’t, the cause is specific to your account.

If you have the post ID, it still tells you when the post was published; see [how to view a tweet by ID on X](/blog/x-guides/view-tweet-by-id/).

## Can You View an Unavailable Post?

**You can view it only when the cause is temporary or personal: follow a protected account and wait for approval, or log in if you were logged out.** Deleted posts, and posts from deactivated or suspended accounts, can’t be viewed on X. Copies saved before removal are covered in [how to find deleted tweets](/blog/x-guides/find-deleted-tweets/).

## Why Do Replies Show “This Post Is Unavailable”?

**Replies show the notice when the post they answered is unavailable to you; the replies themselves stay because they belong to their own authors.** The same notice appears inside quote posts and embedded posts on websites, as covered in [how to embed a tweet](/blog/x-guides/embed-a-tweet/).

## Do Scrapers Return Unavailable Posts?

**No, scraping tools return what X shows publicly, so unavailable posts are missing from their results too.** apidojo’s [Twitter User Scraper](https://apify.com/apidojo/twitter-user-scraper/input-schema) can tell you which accounts are suspended or unavailable with its `includeUnavailableUsers` option, which helps when many posts in a dataset point to missing accounts (Apify).

## Questions people ask

### Does 'this post is unavailable' mean I'm blocked?

Not necessarily; a block is one of several causes. Check whether other people can see the post.

### Will an unavailable post come back?

It can, if a protected account approves you or a deactivated account is reactivated; deleted posts don't come back.

### Why can I see the post on the web but not in the app?

Update the app and log in again; a stale session can show notices that clear on refresh.
