**To search tweets mentioning a user on X, type `@username` into the search bar and open the Latest tab; add `-from:username` to hide the account’s own posts.** For example, `@NASA -from:NASA` returns posts by other people that mention NASA. The result includes replies and ordinary posts that name the account.

Mention search is the basis of brand monitoring and reputation tracking. The account operators it uses are compared in [from: vs to: vs @username on X search](/blog/twitter-search/from-to-mention-operators/). This guide builds on [how to search tweets from a specific user](/blog/twitter-search/search-tweets-from-user/), which covers the from: operator in full. Every operator this guide uses is listed in the [Twitter advanced search operators](/blog/twitter-search/advanced-search-operators/) reference.

## How Do You Find Tweets That Mention Someone?

**You find tweets that mention someone by searching their handle with the @ sign, or by entering it in the Mentioning these accounts field of the Advanced search form.** X’s advanced search supports posts that mention a specific account ([X Help Center](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/x-advanced-search)). Listed below are the 4 steps.

1. **Log in** to x.com or the X app.
2.  **Type** `@username -from:username`.
3.  **Press** Enter.
4. **Open** **Latest** for every mention in time order.

## Mention Search Examples

**These mention searches cover the jobs people use them for most.** Replace the handles, words and dates ([twitter-advanced-search reference](https://github.com/igorbrigadir/twitter-advanced-search)).

| Goal | Query |
| --- | --- |
| All mentions by other accounts | @brand -from:brand |
| Mentions plus the name without the @ | (@brand OR "brand name") -from:brand |
| Mentions that aren’t replies | @brand -from:brand -filter:replies |
| Mentions with a complaint word | @brand (broken OR refund OR "not working") |
| Mentions in a date range | @brand -from:brand since:2026-01-01 until:2026-02-01 |
| Popular mentions | @brand -from:brand min_faves:50 |
| Mentions by verified accounts | @brand -from:brand filter:verified |
| Two accounts mentioned together | @brand1 @brand2 |

The complaint and question searches pair well with the filters in [how to exclude words from Twitter search](/blog/twitter-search/exclude-words/).

## How Do You Find Mentions Without the @ Sign?

**Many people write a brand or person’s name without tagging the account, so add the name in quotes with OR: `(@brand OR "brand name")`.** Quotes keep multi-word names together. Add common misspellings with OR to catch the rest, as shown in [how to search multiple keywords on X with OR](/blog/twitter-search/search-multiple-keywords-or/).

## How Is a Mention Different From a Reply?

**A mention is any post that contains @username; a reply is a post written in answer to one of that account’s posts.** `to:username` returns only replies addressed to the account, while `@username` returns both replies and standalone mentions (twitter-advanced-search reference). Replies are covered in [how to find replies sent to a user on X](/blog/twitter-search/replies-to-user/).

## Why Are Some Mentions Missing?

**Mentions are missing from search when they come from protected or suspended accounts, which X does not index, or when the post names the account without tagging it.** Search the plain name with OR as shown above, and switch between the Top and Latest tabs.

## How to Collect Mentions With apidojo

**apidojo’s [Tweet Scraper V2](https://apify.com/apidojo/tweet-scraper) on Apify collects every post mentioning an account, with text, author, date and engagement, for analysis or reporting.** Mention collection with `@NASA` is one of the actor’s documented examples, and its `mentioning` input does the same job without operators (Apify).

```
{
  "searchTerms": ["(@brand OR \"brand name\") -from:brand -filter:retweets"],
  "sort": "Latest"
}
```
