# How to Build Complex Twitter Search Queries With OR and Parentheses

To build a complex Twitter search query, group each set of alternatives in parentheses with uppercase OR, join the groups with spaces, then add filters and exclusions at the end.

**To build a complex Twitter search query, group each set of alternatives in parentheses with uppercase OR, join the groups with spaces, then add filters and exclusions at the end.** For example, `(puppy OR kitten) (cute OR adorable) -filter:retweets min_faves:100` finds popular original posts about cute pets. Build and test the query one group at a time.

This guide covers the rules X applies to combined queries, a 4-step build method, and ready templates. Every operator used is in the [Twitter advanced search operators](/blog/twitter-search/advanced-search-operators/) reference.

## How Does X Read a Combined Query?

**X reads a space as AND, uppercase OR as either-or, a minus sign as NOT, and parentheses as a group.** Listed below are the 5 rules ([twitter-advanced-search reference](https://github.com/igorbrigadir/twitter-advanced-search)).

1. **Spaces** mean AND: every part separated by a space must match.
2. **OR** must be uppercase and applies to the terms on either side of it.
3.  **Parentheses** keep an OR group together: `(a OR b) c` means a or b, plus c.
4. **A minus sign** removes posts matching the word, phrase or filter right after it.
5. **About 22 operators** fit in one query before X stops applying them.

## How Do You Build a Complex Query Step by Step?

**Build a complex query in 4 steps, testing the results after each one.** Listed below are the steps, with one query growing at each stage.

1. **Start** with the core topic as an OR group: `("electric car" OR EV OR "electric vehicle")`.
2. **Add** a second group that narrows the angle: `("electric car" OR EV) (charging OR range OR battery)`.
3. **Add** filters: `("electric car" OR EV) (charging OR range) lang:en since:2026-01-01`.
4. **Add** exclusions last: `("electric car" OR EV) (charging OR range) lang:en since:2026-01-01 -filter:retweets -giveaway`.

If a step returns nothing, the last addition is the problem. Each group type is covered in [how to search multiple keywords on X with OR](/blog/twitter-search/search-multiple-keywords-or/) and [how to exclude words from Twitter search](/blog/twitter-search/exclude-words/).

## Complex Query Templates

**These templates cover the research jobs that need more than one group.** Replace the words, handles and dates.

| Job | Template |
| --- | --- |
| Brand complaints | (@brand OR "brand name") (broken OR refund OR "not working" OR worst) -from:brand -filter:retweets |
| Purchase intent | ("looking for" OR recommend OR "any suggestions") (crm OR "sales software") ? |
| Competitor comparison | (@brand1 OR @brand2) (vs OR versus OR "switched to" OR alternative) |
| Event coverage | (#Event OR "event name") (live OR keynote OR announced) since:2026-09-01 until:2026-09-04 |
| Expert opinions | (topic1 OR topic2) filter:verified min_faves:200 -filter:replies |
| Job posts in a niche | (hiring OR "we're hiring") ("data engineer" OR "analytics engineer") lang:en |
| Viral media | (puppy OR kitten) (cute OR adorable) filter:images min_faves:500 |

## Why Does a Complex Query Return Nothing?

**A complex query returns nothing when one group is too narrow, OR is lowercase, a parenthesis is missing, or the query passes about 22 operators.** Count the brackets in pairs, retype OR in capitals, and remove one group at a time. Mistakes that look like broken operators are listed in [Twitter search operators that no longer work](/blog/twitter-search/operators-not-working/).

## How Do You Split a Query That Is Too Long?

**Split a long query by OR group: run one query per group with the same filters, and merge the results.** `(brand1 OR brand2 OR brand3) complaint` becomes three shorter queries. On X you run them one by one; with a scraper, all three run in one job.

## How to Run Complex Queries at Scale With apidojo

**apidojo’s [Twitter Scraper Unlimited](https://apify.com/apidojo/twitter-scraper-lite) and [Tweet Scraper V2](https://apify.com/apidojo/tweet-scraper) on Apify accept complex queries exactly as typed on X, and split queries run together as a batch.** The pet query above is one of the documented examples (Apify).

```
{
  "searchTerms": [
    "(@brand1 OR \"brand one\") (broken OR refund) -filter:retweets",
    "(@brand2 OR \"brand two\") (broken OR refund) -filter:retweets"
  ],
  "includeSearchTerms": true,
  "sort": "Latest"
}
```

Tweet Scraper V2 costs $0.40 per 1,000 tweets. The developer workflow is [how to scrape tweets by keyword](/blog/twitter-scraping/scrape-tweets-by-keyword/); see the [apidojo Twitter Scraper](/scrapers/twitter-scraper/).

## The scrapers behind this

- [Twitter Scraper Unlimited Single tweets, reply threads, X Articles and small queries; no minimum $0.016 / query + $0.40 / 1K](/scrapers/twitter-scraper-lite/)
-   [Tweet Scraper V2 Tweets from searches, profiles, Lists and URLs; 49–64 tweets/sec; minimum 50 per query $0.40 / 1K tweets](/scrapers/twitter-scraper/)

## Questions people ask

### Can you nest parentheses?

Keep groups one level deep; a flat set of groups joined by spaces is the most reliable form.

### Is there a query builder for X?

X's Advanced search form builds simple queries; type complex groups by hand.

### Do complex queries work in the X app?

Yes, but check that the phone keyboard keeps straight quotes and no space after colons.
