# TikTok Display API and Login Kit: What Data You Can Get

## What Does the TikTok Display API Do?

**The Display API returns the profile and video metadata of a TikTok user who has authorised your app, so you can display their TikTok identity and videos on your platform.** TikTok describes its purpose as letting your platform’s creators show their TikTok profile and videos without their followers leaving your platform ([TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/display-api-overview/)).

## What Do You Need to Use the Display API?

**You need a TikTok developer account, approval for Login Kit and the Display API, and the `user.info.basic` and `video.list` scopes.** TikTok’s getting-started guide lists those requirements, and each user must also authorise your app before you can read their data ([TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/doc/display-api-get-started)). Listed below are the 4 steps.

1.  **Register** an app on TikTok for Developers.
2.  **Apply** for Login Kit and the Display API, and request the scopes.
3.  **Send** users through Login Kit with `scope=user.info.basic,video.list`.
4.  **Exchange** the authorisation code for an access token and call the endpoints.

## Which Scopes Does the Display API Use?

**The Display API’s core scopes are `user.info.basic` for profile info and `video.list` for public videos; extra scopes unlock more profile fields and stats.** The table lists the user and video scopes from TikTok’s scopes reference ([TikTok for Developers](https://developers.tiktok.com/docs/en/tiktok-api-scopes)).

## What Video Data Does the Display API Return?

**Video endpoints return the fields you request, such as `id`, `title`, `video_description`, `duration`, `cover_image_url`, `share_url` and `embed_link`.** TikTok’s examples request these through the `fields` parameter, and the `embed_link` lets you play the video inside your product (TikTok for Developers).

## What Can’t the Display API Do?

**The Display API can’t search TikTok, read accounts that haven’t authorised your app, or collect comments, follower lists or other creators’ videos.** Those jobs need either TikTok’s Research API, if you’re an eligible academic researcher, or a scraper that reads public pages.
