**To search by location on Instagram, type a city, venue or landmark into the search bar and open the Places tab, or tap the location tag on any post; the place page shows public posts tagged at that location.** It’s the quickest way to see what a restaurant, hotel or neighbourhood actually looks like, through visitors’ posts rather than the business’s own. This guide is one of the search tasks collected in [how to search on Instagram](/blog/instagram-search/how-to-search-on-instagram/).

Place pages only include posts whose creators added a location tag, so they show a sample, not everything posted there. This guide covers searching places, reading place pages and using location data. Searching in general is covered in [how to search on Instagram](/blog/instagram-search/how-to-search-on-instagram/). For people rather than places, see [how to find someone on Instagram](/blog/instagram-search/find-someone-on-instagram/) and [how to find an Instagram user ID](/blog/instagram-search/find-user-id/).

## How Do You Search a Location on Instagram?

**You search places from the same search bar as accounts and hashtags.** Listed below are the 4 steps.

1. **Tap** the magnifying glass at the bottom of the app.
2. **Type** a city, district, venue or landmark.
3. **Open** the **Places** tab in the results.
4. **Tap** a place to see posts tagged there.

You can also tap the location name above any post to open its place page.

## What Does an Instagram Place Page Show?

**A place page shows public posts tagged at that location, usually with top posts and recent posts.** Comparing recent posts with the venue’s own account is a good reality check for restaurants, hotels and events.

## Why Can’t You Find a Location on Instagram?

**A location may not appear if it’s spelled differently, has few tagged posts, or is listed under a broader place, such as the city instead of the venue.** Try the official name, the street, or the neighbourhood.

## Can You Find Someone’s Location on Instagram?

**Only what they choose to share: a location tag on a post shows where that post was tagged, not where the person is.** Treat location tags as public posts, not as a way to track people; using them to follow someone is both against Instagram’s rules and unsafe.

## How Do Businesses Use Location Search?

**Businesses use place pages to see what customers post, find local creators and watch competitors’ venues.** Finding creators who post from your area is covered in [how to find local influencers on Instagram](/blog/instagram-influencers/local-influencers/).
